Module 3

This module has helped me think about the impact of internet on my students’ learning in the following ways:

This Module helped me to think more about my students using the internet in several ways.

The first is being aware of copyright laws. Younger students are not always aware that they are copying someone elses work because to them they are just getting the right answer. So students have to be taught how to take notes on the internet without copying it word for word when writing reports. They also need to be aware of the laws regarding using images.

I also thought about my students using the internet to take assessments. I normally think of assessments as paper and pencil or a project of some sort. Survey's or other activities on the internet are also acceptable forms of assessment.

I'm looking forward to learning more about integrating the internet into my classroom learning and instruction.

This module has helped me think about using standards, CFQ’s, or formative assessments in various ways. Standards have always been a part of my classroom instruction, including undergraduate work so I guess you could say “I don’t know how to teach without standards”. I see them as guiding my instruction so I know what needs to be covered at a certain grade level. Formative assessments fall into that same category of I have always used them. However, with formative assessments I am not as confident in my design and so always looking for new ways to formally assess students especially during instruction so I can monitor and adjust as needed. Curriculum framing questions are a concept that I don’t have as much experience with. I think that they are a great way to help write a unit when they are based around the standards. I see CFQ’s as also assisting students because it gives them guiding questions about the topics they are going to cover during a unit. Sometimes the essential question seems to broad. But the Unit questions and the content questions are a great place to plan the bulk of the unit from. Standards, CFQ’s and assessments all work hand in hand to help teachers guide instruction to make it more meaningful for students.

As an instructional designer I am a facilitator of learning. How I choose to facilitate the learning will determine how my students will learn it. Module 1 made me thinking about viewing everything in terms of being a unit. I was also reminded that I need to make sure that I assess student knowledge prior to beginning a unit. Also, although I may feel like I have a million standards to assess I need to focus it down to just a couple of ideas that students should walk away with knowing. That is only possible with a lot of subject knowledge and planning. Within the unit I need to make sure that I have created tasks that are authentic and purposeful. If students see how it might apply outside of school then they are more likely to participate in the assignment.
